Abstract

This paper surveys the determinants of economic freedom “under the five sub-indices” in the North African region from 1995 to 2020. Graphically, this document shows that North African countries have a different degree of economic freedom. In 2020, the Moroccan and Tunisian economic freedom index is above average, the Algerian economic freedom index is not acceptable and Egypt recorded an equivalent index of 5. Empirically, the results of the Generalized Method of Moments  econometric technique show that commercial openness is the most explanatory factor of economic freedom in the North African region and regulation does not affect economic freedom in the North African region
